The purpose of this exercise is to group related thoughts into a singular statement that expresses your concept and what you’re attempting to achieve. For example, “happiness” might be followed by “smile” and “laugh.” From a design perspective, you can represent these words with bright color combinations, bold fonts, and maximalist designs. That way, you can see what doesn’t work to implement better strategies for your client’s business. Take the time to use a competitor’s website and jot down notes about your overall experience. You can use various parameters like user experience, readability, and ease of use to gauge the website’s performance.

Conceptualization comes into play as we approach the creation of the first wireframes. Here, we make decisions regarding whether to build upon existing frameworks or start from scratch. Each of these stages holds significance, instilling confidence in the designer that all aspects have been accounted for. This leads to more complete design solutions that will scale and serve your project better over time. The fun part is for most designers is visual ideation when you start creating sketches or outlines or wireframes. These basic drawings begin to bring projects to life and are a key part of the iterative process for visual thinkers, in particular.
Brainstorming
This phase is generally referred to as brainstorming, in which you will define your concept verbally. Designs must eventually occupy space (whether physical or digital) in the real world. For this reason, a design concept must be grounded in research, where you will understand the context in which the design must fit. There’s a famous saying that nothing is original, and this is true to an extent. The practice of design—like any artistic discipline—is old, with designers building on the innovations of those who came before.
If we check the recent Mercedes-Benz all-electric vehicles, we will see many of the ideas that we saw in EQ are baked in their production-ready design of the EQS SUV, which was released in 2021. This might sound like nonsense, but visual communication (such as graphic design) requires meaning in order to convey a message. This means that to create an effective design you must have a reliable way of establishing a core, compelling idea early on in each project. Imagine walking into an art gallery and stumbling upon a piece that catches your eye—not because of its traditional strokes or sculpted forms, but due to its vivid manipulation of digital elements. This is digital art. Now, consider receiving a beautifully designed flier for an upcoming event; it communicates effectively, its purpose clear and aesthetics... Think of how much of this you may be already doing and just refine your own processes some. Don’t feel like you have to make sweeping changes in a day; start by adding one new step at a time until the thought process feels like a natural part of your team’s workflow. For many design projects, it might also include a mood or inspiration board for ideas.

It's where ideas turn into actual plans, setting the stage for the entire project. It's super important in the creative process, guiding designers through the steps from coming up with ideas to making them real. Ideation, which is just a fancy word for creative thinking, is a big part of Conceptual Design. To get Conceptual Design, think about keeping things simple, functional, and good-looking – all focused on what users need. It's like the guide that leads from thinking up ideas to bringing them to life.

Concepts must eventually evolve from abstract thoughts to visual representations. This can be done with a pencil and paper or in a digital medium, such as Procreate. Let’s explore conceptual design and how to incorporate it effectively into your web design workflow. Finally, you will want to research the work of other designers in order to gather reference material and inspiration, especially from those you find particularly masterful.
However, the conceptual design process celebrates creativity and uniqueness. During the ideation phase, designers take a concept and expand, elaborate, and refine it until they are confident it is truly original. Conceptual design plays a crucial role in the design process, bridging the gap between an abstract idea and a tangible final product. By focusing on the holistic visual representation of an idea from development to execution, conceptual design serves several essential purposes. Typically, the conceptual design stage occurs between the product requirements and the detailed design phases.
In brief, a conceptual model is an abstraction that software designers use to document and convey essential characteristics of a software application before the application is developed. To avoid confusion with other software design abstractions, this chapter also explains how conceptual models differ from other design abstractions and practices. At Inkbot Design, we understand the importance of brand identity in today's competitive marketplace. With our team of experienced designers and marketing professionals, we are dedicated to creating custom solutions that elevate your brand and leave a lasting impression on your target audience. During these early phases, the design team aims to ensure that clients have all the knowledge needed to make sound judgments.
Paintball, a sport with diverse forms and equipment, attracts participants from different age groups. However, its association with violent imagery is incongruent with the company’s inclusive approach, especially when catering to youth. The challenge is to redefine the image of paintball, highlighting the excitement and strategy it offers without perpetuating negative associations. Imagine a scenario where a client is a company specializing in creating laser-equipped guns for paintball events. When a player hits a target, laser beams create hit marks and tally points on a specialized “target” vest.
Conceptual design is the process through which a group of designers persuades the management contractor that their concept merits further investigation. In an era where technology and sustainability intertwine seamlessly, concept design has become even more pivotal. Tools like BIM and advancements in VR and AR have not only enhanced visualization but also increased stakeholder participation and understanding. Such technological integrations promise a future where designs are more accurate, sustainable, and aligned with user expectations. Concept design, often heralded as the linchpin of any construction project, is a multidimensional process that balances aesthetics, functionality, and feasibility.
For UX designers, conceptual design offers a gateway to delve into abstract concepts, proficiently communicate ideas, and evoke emotions in the audience. Designers use several tools, including sketches, representations, and 3D representations of fundamental, early concepts, throughout the conceptual design process. They tend to exclude technical details like size so that they may be readily re-evaluated and updated. In an engineering product design environment, concept or conceptual design is an early stage of a product design process.

The highest peaks, especially Mont Blanc, should not be attempted by people lacking mountain climbing experience and equipment, even using the easiest route (voie royale). Traditional mountaineering was a practical business of hunting and farming, and of leading travellers over the passes by the safest route, tugging their pack-mules through the sleet. In 1760 the scientist Horace Bénédict de Saussure put up a prize for the first ascent of Mont Blanc. In those days the mountain lay in Savoy, an independent country that included Nice, Aosta, Piedmont and Sardinia.

For example, slim, straight lines intersecting at various angles can create a sense of chaos or tension, generating visual excitement and dynamism in your work. This technique can be particularly effective in capturing the essence of high-energy, fast-paced situations or conveying a sense of urgency. Understanding the psychological impact of various colours is essential for emphasising critical information and guiding the viewer's eye throughout your design. By harnessing the emotive power of colour, you can create visually engaging compositions that resonate with your audience on a deeper level. You can confidently tackle more advanced design challenges by diligently studying and applying these fundamental design principles. Put them in a series of experiences using storyboards to communicate them to the other stakeholders easily and validate them with users.
Define and Frame Your Design Challenge by Creating Your Point Of View and Ask “How Might We”
They want to see their brand in a similar (if not better) light, and only you can make that happen. Use these guidelines as an arsenal for your brand development process. Some of them contradict each other, while others complement each other. As a designer, remember that there is always an opportunity to do something brilliant and significant by breaking some odd rules here and there.
Stage 2: Define—State Your Users' Needs and Problems
Many of the principles below are closely related and complement one another. Visual design is about creating and making the general aesthetics of a product consistent. To create the aesthetic style of a website or app, we work with fundamental elements of visual design, arranging them according to principles of design. These elements and principles together form the building blocks of visual design, and a firm understanding of them is crucial in creating a visual design of any product.
What are graphic design concepts?
You likely want to direct how your audience consumes the content you create. This natural progression of one’s eyes, from one object to another, can be controlled by the design of the content. For any design to have a dynamic look, it is essential to have well-contrasted elements.
These sit atop the throne at the top of the hierarchy, with the elements laid out below ranked in order of importance. There’s a logo at the top, a menu at the top, and then elements in descending order of importance below. For example, say you wanted to bring attention to a call to action on a landing page. You could increase the text size and use colors that stand out from the background, emphasizing the CTA and making sure visitors can’t miss it. To run with the seesaw example, it would be like having a 100kg weight on one side and 100 kg of feathers stacked on the other. It still achieves balance but provides a whole different experience.
Alan Dix, Professor of Human-Computer Interaction, explains what wicked problems are in this video. By using scale to make an element larger than others appearing with it, you can emphasise that element. Not only can you make an element stand out this way—you can also use scale to create a sense of depth (since nearer objects appear larger to the human eye). Exaggerated scales of images also add a certain level of interest and drama to them. Balance can be achieved by having symmetry in the design (for instance, having a webpage with centralised text and images). However, you can also achieve balance without symmetry — perhaps unsurprisingly, this is known as asymmetrical balance.
This understanding enables them to create interfaces that meet real-life demands rather than just creating a beautiful interface that may not be effective. To ensure that a product is efficient, it should undergo alpha and beta testing stages. The development team typically performs alpha testing to identify and fix any issues before releasing the product to a small group of external users for beta testing. During beta testing, users can provide feedback on the product, identifying any bugs, errors, or usability issues that need to be addressed. This feedback can then inform the development team on improving the product and adding new features to enhance the user experience. The best way to build an efficient service is through incremental improvement.
Considering these factors when designing a new product or service is essential to ensure that it solves the target audience's problem effectively. When we talk about “demands” in the context of design, we are not referring to the needs of a government or company. Instead, we are talking about the wants and conditions of the end-users of a particular service or product. Understanding these demands is critical to the design process, enabling designers to create functional and meaningful products for their target audience.

The team empathizes with people through observation and user interviews to gather deep insights. More than a process, the Head, Heart and Hand framework outlines the different roles that designers must perform to create great results. With the foundation ready, teams gear up to “think outside the box.” They brainstorm alternative ways to view the problem and identify innovative solutions to the problem statement. At the beginning of the design thinking process, teams should not get too caught up in the technical implementation. If teams begin with technical constraints, they might restrict innovation.
Your design will evolve throughout development, but when you have a solid concept, your concept will anchor the whole team with a common goal and will set the vision for the product. The easiest way to do this is through juxtaposition and contrast. Place bright colors next to lighter hues, text next to images, and round shapes next to square ones. By doing so you can keep viewers engaged and your design interesting. Designers can guide this by using lines, edges, shapes, and colors to create focal points and encourage certain ways of seeing.
At the start of the project, we gather information about the site, typology, brief, users and programme. These become the foundational project context, parameters and requirements that we are working with. It is not the materials, the layout of spaces, the activities, the people, or the site. It is the combination of every aspect of the project coming together in particular ways to create something different and unique.
It could be anything, from using a certain font color to adding a repetitive pattern to a social media post. Radial balance is when elements “radiate” from a point in the centre of a design. Think of rays shining from the sun, petals blossoming from a rose, or a squirt of tomato sauce in the middle of a juicy meat pie. Luckily for us, in the late 1970s, an influential designer named Dieter Rams saw this problem. In response, he asked himself what constituted good design and came up with his own list of ten principles.
Design thinking is an iterative, non-linear process which focuses on a collaboration between designers and users. It brings innovative solutions to life based on how real users think, feel and behave. These prototypes can be shared and tested within the team itself, in other departments or on a small group of people outside the design team.
You’ll analyze your observations to define the core problems you and your team have identified up to this point. Defining the problem and problem statement must be done in a human-centered manner. Systems thinking has applications in various fields, such as medical, environmental, political, economic, human resources, and educational systems. For a more comprehensive discussion on the origins of design thinking, see The History of Design Thinking. Herbert Simon’s 1969 book, "The Sciences of the Artificial," has one of the earliest references to design thinking. David Kelley, founder of the design consultancy IDEO, coined the term “design thinking” and helped make it popular.
Working together from start to finish results in cohesion and the best way to ensure all your design goals are met. Begin by conducting research of design trends, user needs and the goals of the design challenge at hand. Data collection and analysis is crucial for informing decisions throughout the design process. If you're looking to design a website from scratch, or simply looking to update your design, design concept is an important idea within web design to understand. At the end of the day, a design concept is one of the most important practices for building an application from scratch.
On one of my previous voyages on an MSC ship, I found the complaints valid. If you have a sweet tooth, head down to deck six, where French chocolatier and pastry chef Jean-Philippe Maury has a permanent presence on MSC Meraviglia. To call what you’ll find a “chocolate shop” is to understate the wonders it holds woefully. MSC Meraviglia was designed with passenger flow in mind, and that’s important when you’re on a ship with around 5,599 other people.

Speaking of limited-time performances, on the second-to-last night of the voyage, I sat in the theater unsure of what to expect from the headliner, Lorraine Crosby. "You might be thinking, 'She sounds like the lady who sings that Meat Loaf song.' Well, that's because I am the lady who sings that Meat Loaf song," Crosby joked. Her biggest claim to fame is that she rocked the female vocals in Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love, But I Won't Do That."

Tacos & Cantina is the Mexican restaurant on MSC's newest vessels. It offers tapas-style small plates; I highly encourage you to order a few, as there's a lot on the menu that's delicious. My favorites are the guacamole, tortilla soup and cheese quesadillas. It was another 10 minutes until our waiter took our food order, and not once did anyone ask us if we'd like something other than water to drink.
As you pass back and forth between events, don't miss the regularly scheduled dome shows along the Galleria Meraviglia promenade. You'll see the LED projections on the ceiling, covering topics like famous ceilings, dinosaurs, space and the changing of the seasons. If you'd rather get your groove on, keep an eye out for dance lessons and themed parties hosted by the entertainment team.
That might include khakis with button-down or polo-style collared shirts for men and sundresses or nice pants with a flowy top for women. MSC Cruises does not offer self-service laundry facilities on any of its ships. However, passengers can send their clothing out to be washed, folded, pressed or dry-cleaned for a fee. MSC Cruises' Wi-Fi, available through the MSC for Me app, is fast enough to be competitive with all of the other major cruise lines. Meraviglia Bar & Lounge
One of the most fun and flashy locations on MSC Meraviglia cruises is the Galleria Meraviglia, a central indoor walkway similar to the Royal Promenade on Royal Caribbean ships. It's a long space flanked by bars, restaurants and shops with a feel similar to a shopping mall. However, the highlight for me is the giant LED screen, which runs the length of the space and hosts what the line calls "dome shows." Enticing amenities also include a two-story aft lounge, a solarium with a pool and a variety of specialty restaurants. Onboard features include jaw-dropping entertainment and the fleet's largest and enhanced MSC Yacht Club.
Three bars (Atmosphere Bar North, Atmosphere Bar South and Bamboo Bar) by the main Atmosphere Pool serve up classic umbrella drinks, as well as beer and other libations. You'll also find bars in the Marketplace Buffet, on the Yacht Club sun deck and in the Yacht Club Top Sail Lounge. A more affordable option than most alternative restaurants is room service. A la carte pricing and delivery fees will apply to other cabin types, depending on the experience package you book.
Satisfy your cravings from our menu of freshly grilled food while you enjoy yourself by the pool. Exclusive to MSC Yacht Club Guests, the MSC Yacht Club Sundeck & Bar, offers a luxurious and tranquil place to enjoy a cocktail.Surround yourself in the lap of luxury and let our artful bartenders prepare something special for you! For the connoisseur, there is a handpicked selection of premium drinks available. This pool-side ice-cream bar offers six flavors of delicious soft ice-cream and fresh fruit treats, as well as tropical and frozen drinks and Coladas. From Signature Cocktails, beers, Coladas, soft drinks, coffee and tea there is something to suit everyone’s taste.
Also, a 15% gratuity is added to bills at bars for cruisers who do not have a drinks package. If you have a drinks package, you'll pay a 15% service charge when you purchase the package, but not on individual drinks. A 15% service charge is also added to items in minibars, salons and spas. As with most MSC ships, MSC Meraviglia's entertainment is stellar.
There's also a selection of Spanish beer, fresh fruit juices, spiked milkshakes and other fun concoctions. The service was so great there that I returned on a different night just to order drinks. MSC bookings can be confusing for first-timers because, in addition to selecting a cabin type (inside, outside, balcony or suite), passengers must also choose from one of three experience packages. Dubbed Bella, Fantastica and Aurea, they all come with different perks and inclusions, as noted below.
All four dining rooms offer set seating, except Panorama, which also accommodates passengers with Aurea bookings who have anytime dining. Waves, Panorama, L'Olive Dorée and L'Olivo D'Oro are MSC Meraviglia's four main dining rooms, where passengers can eat dinner for free. (Specific restaurants will also be open on certain days for breakfast and lunch, depending on the day's schedule.) Menus, which change daily, are the same across all four. The room was furnished with a king-size bed that converts into two twins on request, a couch and a desk/vanity area. It featured a closet and cabinet space for storage and an en suite bathroom.

Margaritaville at Sea will sail new ship from Tampa in 2024 - USA TODAY
Margaritaville at Sea will sail new ship from Tampa in 2024.
Margaritaville at Sea is expanding with the launch of Margaritaville at Sea Islander, the cruise line's second and larger vessel which the company says will be the "ultimate tropical oasis at sea". On these two-day sailings, the ship draws a diverse passenger base that goes far beyond Jimmy Buffett fans, reaching all ages and demographics. The ship did not have any LGBTQ or solo meetups, but there is a daily meeting for Friends of Bill W. As with any low fares, there is always a caveat -- and while Margaritaville at Sea fare may seem inexpensive at first, there are some not-so-obvious costs. You'll have to pay port fees, for one thing, as well as fuel charges and gratuities. WiFi costs extra, and there's mandatory valet parking if you drive to the port.

Instead of bustling attractions, the top decks of Celebrity ships offer lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas where you can enjoy the experience of being at sea without a lot of hustle and bustle. Inside, the experience revolves around dining, classic showroom entertainment and a classy bar and music scene — just as it has on Celebrity ships for years. With relatively inclusive fares for some sailings at Celebrity starting under $100 per person, per day, there's a good argument to be made that the line is one of cruising's great values. However, it's the line you take if you want a taste of the all-inclusive and upscale experience of a luxury line without paying $1,000 per person, per day. Still, for now at least, Celebrity ships are firmly anchored in the mass-market category. The line in recent years has often used the term "luxury" to describe its offerings.
I tried the newest ships from Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Norwegian. Here’s how they compare
Our reviewers evaluate products and services based on unbiased research. There’s so much to look forward to on a Celebrity Cruises® vacation. Cruise Planner helps you arrange every detail before you even set sail, so you can relax the minute you step aboard—and every minute that follows. Celebrity Beyond is spending her inaugural season in the Caribbean with a 6-night 'Western Caribbean and Perfect Day' voyage, including a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay starting in May 2024.
Celebrity Apex
That means Celebrity's passengers can expect more sophisticated surroundings and an upscale vibe at relatively affordable prices. Both of these are quite different ships from your usual cruise ships, they are expedition ships. This means they are much smaller and have very different passenger and operational needs because they operate in much shallower, confined waters and must adhere to even stricter environmental laws in these regions. You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them.
Love - Heavy focus on modern adult experience

I took my first solo cruise on Celebrity Cruises. After 7 nights, here are the pros and cons of cruising alone.
The onboard entertainment featured performances and musicians singing modern songs while late-night entertainment included headphone disco and dancing under the stars. We loved watching the bartenders at the Martini Bar each evening, as they put on quite the spectacle performance with martini glasses. Business Insider's reporter took a luxury cruise with Virgin Voyages and dined at restaurants with menus designed by Michelin-starred chefs. World-class architects, interior designers, and landscape artists have created the most inspiring spaces at sea— our fleet. Celebrity Silhouette is returning to the Southern Caribbean and the Bahamas with itineraries ranging between 4-11 nights.
Celebrity Solstice® Series
Unlike some big-ship lines, Celebrity isn't topping its vessels with waterslides, go-kart tracks, ropes courses and other family-focused attractions. Other extra-charge venues found on at least some Celebrity ships include Raw on Five, which serves sushi and sashimi, and The Porch, which offers a raw bar with oysters and lobster rolls. Some ships feature a Parisian patisserie-like venue called Le Grand Bistro that offers light fare such as ham-and-cheese baguettes during the day and gourmet charcuterie and cheese boards with carafes of wine in the evening. Every Celebrity vessel also has a casual buffet eatery where meals are included in the fare. Near the main pool area on ships, these are called Oceanview Cafe, and they typically offer a wide range of dishes. Celebrity ships also are significantly more all-inclusive — and even a tad more upscale — than the ships operated by the other big cruise lines.
2025-2026 Caribbean itineraries
The first two guests sharing a stateroom receives at least 30% off per person cruise fare savings Offer (the “Offer”) on selected cruises. In February 2014, Celebrity Cruises announced it would add "The Suite Class" fleetwide. Suite Class passengers have their own private restaurant and VIP lounge. Key features on Solstice Class ships include the Lawn Club, which is a freshly manicured lawn on the ship's highest deck. Passengers enjoy casual outdoor activities, a country-club atmosphere, and grass between their toes.
Celebrity Cruises loyalty program: Captain’s Club
In comparison, I’ve been able to get 4-night cruises on Royal Caribbean for as cheap as $500. Generally speaking, Celebrity Cruises is more expensive than sister-brand Royal Caribbean. Since the cruise line focuses more on luxury, innovation and cutting-edge design, this is where it differentiates itself from budget-friendly Royal Caribbean. On a longer cruise, I’d love to see the expansive type of entertainment available to compare to other cruise lines. The headliner shows were also excellent with the ship’s singers and dancers.
Celebrity Edge makes her way out to new ports of call across the Pacific, such as Fiji, American Samoa, Samoa, and Tonga. The Royal Caribbean-owned brand Celebrity operates one of the industry's youngest and most innovative fleets. The vessels all are Malta-flagged, except the Galapagos-based fleet (Ecuador-flagged). Qsine Restaurant will be added fleetwide and will offer "Le Petit Chef" (virtual dining-entertainment experience) created by Skullmapping artists and presented by TableMation Studios exclusively for Celebrity Cruises. Since March 2018, RCCL offers one login for RCI and Celebrity websites and mobile apps. The new policy allows one account to be used for loyalty program benefits, bookings, and reservations with both brands.
They also can help you if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage. That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise — there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process, trust us — we recommend that you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises. Staying in balcony cabins, which the line calls Veranda cabins, will get you 3 points a day. You must be 21 to consume alcohol on Celebrity sailings from North American ports. The drinking age on sailings from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand is 18. While the free programming for children ages 3-12 ends at 10 p.m., you can pay extra to leave your kids at shipboard Camp at Sea centers past 10 p.m.
Celebrity ships are also known for their martini bars, each called — simply enough — the Martini Bar. Another standout feature of Celebrity ship interiors is a wine-focused venue called Cellar Masters that stocks more than 400 wines for tastings. A particularly cool feature of the Cellar Masters venues is that they have self-serve Enomatic wine dispensers. Just swipe your card and you can get a sampler of wine in varying sizes.
In addition, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge are often cited as the cruise line’s best ships. You may be familiar with formal nights on other cruise lines, where passengers are expected to dress up for the evening. On Celebrity, formal nights have been replaced with Evening Chic nights. Since then, it has added many more ports and ships and now sails to over 300 destinations on all 7 continents. Celebrity’s 15 ships feature attractions and activities that will appeal to the modern, luxury traveler. We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners.
Celebrity ships also offer activities for teens (ages 13-17) at dedicated Teen Clubs. Teens can hang out at the clubs with other children their own age and also take part in organized teen sports competitions, silent disco parties, culinary classes and Xbox tournaments. Among other unusual deck-top features, some of the Solstice Class ships also have a glass-making pavilion next to the Lawn Clubs that is home to glass-making classes. Some Celebrity ships also have a classic French restaurant called Murano, which comes with a flat fee of $40 per person.
